Florence Marr died in a German internment camp

As we remember the fallen of the World Wars and other conflicts, Association member Charlotte Wruck sends a most unusual death certificate: that of Florence (Barnes) Marr, wife of Sackett descendant Sidney Marr. The cause of death, recorded on a further document, was "cerebrale apoplexie". Sidney and Florence were living in Guernsey at the time of the German invasion and subsequent occupation of the island during the Second World War. They were among a large number of English-born islanders deported to Germany on Hitler's orders in reprisal for various British actions elsewhere.

Sidney was eventually released and, after the war, married Violet Burge, also an internee at Biberach Camp and a friend of Florence's.

Michael Sackett is awarded British Empire Medal

Michael Oliver Sackett of Croscombe, Somerset, has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. The award is in recognition of his 23 years' service as a volunteer in, and more recently trustee of, the Mendip Citizens Advice Bureau. (This is Somerset website).

Michael is the youngest of four sons of Alfred Barrett Sackett, MC, MA (1895–1977), and grandson of The Revd Alfred Barrett Sackett, OBE (1862–1951). Both Alfred Barrett Sacketts appear in the Notables section of the Sackett Family Association website.

Michael and his wife Jo hosted a meeting in 1994 of English Sacketts interested in the family's history, including Marion Sackett who had undertaken considerable research work, and Chris Sackett, currently the Association webmaster.

"Saket" place in India

Association member Nigel "Ollie" Sackett has spotted a Saket place in New Delhi, India. The name would appear to have a distinct Indian derivation and would not therefore be related to the Sackett family.

Wikipedia has two mentions:

        1. "Saket is an upmarket residential colony located in the South Delhi district, of Delhi, India. The name Saket in Sanskrit means a place that is close to the heavens and Saket was the ancient name of the city of Ayodhya."—see Wikipedia: Saket (Delhi).

        2. "Saket District Centre is a commercial centre located in Saket, New Delhi."—see Wikipedia: Saket District Centre.

The Sackett Family Association website sackettfamily.info has been updated with the following new and revised pages:
The page for Weygant's The Family Record has transcriptions of Sackett entries in issues 1 (Jan 1897), 5 (May 1897), and 9/10 (Sep & Oct 1897). These are the only issues of the magazine of which I have copies. Other members having complete sets may like to check to see if there is more Sackett data in other issues.

Thank you to Betty-Jeanne Grant and Helen Jeffries for pictures and documentation on their ancestors. Charles "Chuck" Sackett has sent a picture of Nelson G Sackett, and Terri Carlson has provided additional data on the transcriptions of Pittsfield Families (specifically entries 3:225 Capt William Francis, and 4:98–99 Oren Goodrich).

The documentation sent by Betty-Jeanne Grant appears on Patricia Gwendoline White's page (see links to images in Notes and Citations). Other members may wish to send images of documents relating to their Sackett ancestral lines. As a general rule documents for publication should be items not otherwise easily available on research websites. Please send to Chris Sackett, not to the Mailing List as the list cannot handle attachments.
